CBS green lights 'Genius Bar' TV show

Apple's Genius Bar will soon be able to add entertainment' to its list of things it does for people, as CBS has given two thumbs up for a show pilot titled Genius Bar. Amazing Race Picked Up For 11th Season

The four time Emmy winning "Amazing Race" on CBS was just renewed by them for another season, which will be the shows 11th edition. The show where 12 teams of 2 follow clues around the world has been getting strong ratings on its new Sunday night slot. The 10th edition of the show has been averaging over 10 million viewers per episode. Every week the last team to arrive at a set pit stop could be eliminated. Over the weeks the number of teams gets less and then at the end the last few teams rush to get to the finish line and win the prize which is 1 million dollars. The show does a good job of putting together the teams of 2 of which both members have some kind of relationship with each other. The relationship could be brother/sister, friends, dating, married or whatever. The key in this race apart from being quick and smart is also being able to work together under pressure. This last thing is usually the downfall of lots of the teams because if you are fighting its going to distract from the goal. I enjoy this show and never miss it and is not just because one team this time is a Miss New York and a Miss California although being a guy that is a plus. The reason I watch it is you get to see all parts of the world and also see all the crazy things the teams have to do and watch as some times overcome as some teams fail. Its a show where you can pull for you favorites and at the same time hope that others fail. The Amazing Race is at 8pm on Sundays, check local listings.

NBC Nightly News Retakes Title

The CBS Evenning News with new host Katie Couric was number one in the ratings for her first two weeks but last week NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams retook that crown. The Nightly News show finished first with 8.2 million viewers on NBC followed by The CBS Evenning News with 7.7 million viewers and right behind World News Tonight which Charles Gibson at 7.6 million viewers. The fact that the CBS Evenning News dropped to second isn't that big of a surprise a lot of the viewers were tuning in because they were curious to see how Katie Couric was as a host. The key over the long term is to see how the numbers settle and who builds the best following of the three hosts.

Housewives Premiere Weaker Than Last Year

The third season premiere of Housewives on ABC was down in the ratings from last seasons premiere. This season premiere had 23.8 million viewers in the 18-49 group and was the nights top show, but last years premiere had 28.4 million viewers for that age group. Last season became lackluster as the season went on so I wonder if some of the viewers went elsewhere. The season is still young and may change but if the lower numbers continue ABC may grow concerned.

Tonight is the premiere of Heroe's on NBC at 9pm. This show has been getting a lot of buzz recently, its a show about normal people across America with special powers. Its a show that you might expect to find on NBC's owned Sci Fi Channel on cable instead of network television. The buzz was helped by a special tie in with Yahoo. These people or Heroes eventaully become intertwined with each other and together they protect everyone else. The plot kind of sounds like a Marvel Comics story but from the clips i have seen it looks interesting. The question is can it be a wide audience show or just have a cult following.

"Jericho" Has Strong Ratings In Australia

The new CBS show "Jericho" had stong ratings in its series premiere in Australia. The show was shown on Australias Network Ten less than 24 hours after its CBS debut. Season premieres usually start in January in Australia but Network Ten decided to premiere this show early. The show averaged 1.22 million viewers which doesn't sound like much but it is a 41% share of viewers 16-39. You wouldn't think a show set in the midwest of America would do so well but with its themes and the times we live it it seems to have struck a cord down under.

"Jericho" Series Debut Tonight On CBS

Tonight on CBS at 8pm is the premiere of the new series Jericho. The main character in this is called Jake and he returns home after a long absence to a small town in Kansas called Jericho. The reason he returns is to pick up some money his grandfather left for him; He visits his family including his dad who has control of the money, but him and his dad have a bad relationship so his dad says no to giving him the money. Jake leaves empty handed and heads out of town as a nuclear bomb goes off miles away in Denver. Another driver is watching the explosion too and ends up crashing head on to him. Jake is the only one to make it and walks with a bad leg back to town. On the way he rescues stranded kids in a school bus and drives it back to town. The town is cut off from the outside world and in the dark when the power goes out. People in town start to push and shove at a gas station and it nearly turns in to a riot until the school bus with kids arrive. Jakes dad who is also the mayor tells them about another explosion in Atlanta and gives an inpassioned speech and calms them down. Outside town a prison bus is found overturned and when the Sheriff checks it out you hear a gunshoot and then later you see the Sheriff shot on the ground. So now it seems with all the other problems there are dangerous prisoners on the lose too. In town there is also a ex St Louis cop that just arrived and there seems to be more to his background than just that. A blonde is driving out of town when she runs over loads of dead birds in the road which hints at radiation problems in future episodes. The review might sound like a movie of the week or miniseries because that is what the first episode seems like. The show is well acted and in fact I did enjoy it, but my problem with it is the end of the world as we know it theme is a little depressing. Its fine as I mentioned before for a miniseries or movie but will people tune in every week with the sad theme. The show I think owes a lot to ABC's Lost but this time instead of being stranded on an island they are stranded on a virtual island cut off from everything else. The show could grow a following like Lost but I think it could have a tough time. The show maybe would have been a better fit on basic cable where with lots of showings it would have time to build an audience.

CW Network Premieres Tonight

Tonight is the night that the new CW Network premieres with America's Next Top Model as its first show at 8pm. The CW is the new network formed from the WB and UPN networks which both were money losing. The idea with CW is to put the best shows from the former networks together with some new shows and hopefully make money. The fact that you have one less network competing for ad dollars will help but I still think it will be a tough climb for them. Building a network until it makes money can take years and the FOX network paid big bucks for the NFL to jump start its goal of becoming a success. The new network does have popular shows such as 7th Heaven, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars and Girlfriends as well as America's Next Top Model so it does have a good base to build from. The CW has a lot of former WB shows on the schedule so is the CW going to go after the former networks young teen viewers only or will it try to be a broader network. The long term question is how long the owners of the new network will hold out losing money until the network becomes profitable. Click on the story title to see the CW networks new promo clip.

ABC Looking Flat On Monday Without Football

Now that Monday Night Football has left ABC for its cousin cable channel ESPN it seems to me that ABC doesn't know what to do on Monday to replace it. They have a returning show in Wife Swap at 8pm and another showing at 9pm followed by Supernanny at 10pm. While i do like both shows it seems a stop gap measure to me until The Bachelor Rome premieres on October 2nd at 9pm.

The likeable Howie Mandel returns tonight as host of the hit gameshow Deal Or No Deal on NBC at 8pm. This time the prizes are bigger and also includes a big prize a viewer can win as well. This Week Is The Big Premiere Week

This week is huge for most of the United States television networks as they premiere the largest number of their fall shows starting tonight. "The Class" Series Debut Tonight On CBS

CBS which over the last few years had great success with its Monday night block of comedies premieres a new one tonight at 8pm called "The Class". I must admit when I first read about this one it didn't seem like a show I would like. It is a comedy with a large cast and I pictured people walking in and out making wisecracks and then leaving, kind of a cross between Friends and Laverne and Shirley. After seeing the first episode I must say im pleasantly surprised and did find it entertaining. One man decides to get together for his girlfriends anniversary members of their third grade class for a surprise party for her. These are people that haven't seen each other since then and he calls and gets together as many as he can from their class picture. The former classmates for the most part have many problems from the angry girl, man living with mom, beauty that married the jock and not happy, to the guy that's going to commit suicide right as the phone for the party is ringing. The characters are very formulaic but what sets it apart is good acting and a quirky script. The girlfriend doesn't like the surprise and dumps him in front of all the people. The problem with a large cast is will people care about all the characters and can the script writers make all the characters interesting and funny. At some point they might have to concentrate on a few central characters and it will be interesting to see if they have the time to develop the show. The show is helped by being together with all the other CBS comedies on Monday night but will it be able to compete with Wife Swap on ABC and Deal Or No Deal on NBC at the same time it remains to be seen.

WB's Last Night Is Tonight

The WB Network has its last night of programing tonight before it switches over to the CW on most stations on Wednesday. Tonight the WB is showing some classic shows that made the network as well as some of the various promo ads over the years. The shows being shown are all series premieres at 5pm is Felicity, 6pm is Angel, 7pm Buffy The Vampire Slayer and at 9pm Dawson's Creek. I think this is a very classy way to fade in to television history and even though the network didn't have a really long life its a shame to see it go.

The Amazing Race Season Premiere Tonight

Tonight at a special time of 8:30 pm on CBS is the season premiere of one of my favorite shows "The Amazing Race". If you are not familar with the show its where several groups of two people that have some connection follow clues and race around the world as they compete against the others. The first pair to make it over the finish line receives a one million dollar prize. Every week one the last team to arrive at that episodes pit stop could get eliminated and get send home. The race is more that just who is the fittest it also takes brains and even charm at times to get help from the locals on the way. Probally the most important thing isn't being fittest its being able to work well with your partner even after being exhausted and not argue. Early on its fun to guess who will make it to the end and who will self distruct at some point. The mixture of teams is always well done with totally different people from different walks of life. Some teams help each other at times and some don't but its interesting to see how people react under stress. If you like reality shows and haven't watched this one before i say give it a try.

CBS Survivor Debut Has Lower Ratings

The latest installment of CBS's Survivor debuted to its lowest ratings of a premiere since season one. Thursdays premiere called Survivor: Cook Islands had an audience of 15.5 million in the 18-49 age group which compares with 19.2 million for the last premiere Survivor: Exile Island back in February. Over the last few weeks there has been plenty of discussion over this seasons idea to break up the Survivors by race; General Motors the shows main sponsor for six years, pulled out soon after this was announced although they said it had nothing to do with the race issue. Because of all the discussion over seperating the teams by race you would have thought that people would have tuned in at least for the first episode to see what happens. I don't know if people were turned off by the idea or it was just the fact that some of the Survivor audience has moved on to other shows. Survivor was the show that started the reality craze on network television and I still enjoy it. The show was up against mostly weak competition except for a couple of new comedies on Fox so even though the audience was 15.5 million it will be interesting to see what happens when the other networks premiere their shows and how much of that audience remains with Survivor.

Review: Survivor Cook Islands Premiere On CBS

Okay this past Thursday saw the premiere of Survivor: Cook Islands on CBS. The longtime popular show has tried sometime new in the face of softening ratings that is dividing the teams by race. When this idea was announced the shows main sponsor General Motors bailed out and it caused a lot of negative stories to be written. I believe the idea is not a good one and playing races against each other to grab ratings is a dangerous idea. In a worse case senario the show could play to negative racial stereotypes which would not be good for anyone. Okay after seeing the first episode where there are four teams divided by race it does seem at least so far to be an interesting show. The four teams are the Asian, Hispanic, Caucasian and African American and that is also the position each team finished in the competition with the African American team losing one member in tribal council. The interesting part about the African American team was that the group consisted of three women and two men; where the two men made all the decisions on there own but at triabal council the three women voted one of them out. Another interesting part was how the Asian team was made up of people from countries all over Asia but when it came to competition they worked well together. I am open minded and will give the show a chance, when the Amazing Race did a family addition I was worried, but it worked out okay so i will give Survivor: Cook Islands a chance.

Review: Nanny 911 On Fox

I just watched the season premiere of Nanny 911 on Fox and it is very similar to Super Nanny on ABC. But the main difference is there are three English nannies instead of just the one on Super Nanny. Each week a different nanny goes to a house where the're are out of control children. Over a weeks time the nanny helps them solve their problems which sometimes can be as much the parents as the kids. The nanny will observe first and then put together some rules and provides leadership to help them. The show is so close to Super Nanny in format that you could be confused if you switched between the two. The show is a feel good show with a family each week coming to deal with their problems and usually resulting in a happy ending as the nanny is leaving at the end of the week. The show is a bit corny but i must say it is worth watching. If you want to watch it the show is now on Friday nights at 8pm on Fox.

Letterman On CBS For 4 More Years

David Letterman has just signed a deal that will keep him on latenight on CBS for four more years through the 2009-2010 season. Daves competition at that hour Jay Leno is leaving in 2009 when Conan o Brien will take over the Tonight Show. The new deal was a little bit surprising considering he had heart surgery in 2000 and was also kept of the air for shingles in 2003, so it was thought he might want to walk away. Dave is one of the highest paid people on television and even though Jay Leno has higher ratings im sure he will do okay in his new deal. His show is very entertaining and im glad to see it will continue for several more years.

Discovery Network Plans Steve Irwin Tributes

The Discovery Network channels such as Animal Planet plan to run marathons of Steve Irwins shows and clips from over 200 appearances on the networks. The popular host of shows such as The Crocodile Hunter died from a stingray barb Monday while filming another show. Its was Steve show The Crocodile Hunter that put Animal Planet on the map and produced several imitators. The host was always hyper and would put himself right up close to deadly animals such as crocodiles, snakes and spiders.

Katie Couric To Make CBS Evening News Debut

Tonight Katie Couric makes her debut as host of the CBS Evening News after co hosting NBC's Today Show for fifthteen years. Katie is the first female solo host of one of the major networks evening news shows. Some of the articles I have read have said that people won't watch a woman in that position. I disagree I watched Elizabeth Vargas hosting World News Tonight on ABC and she did an amazing job; If Katie does half as good as a job Elizabeth did she will be fine. I'm sure Katie will get big ratings at first as people are curious and tune in to check out the programme. After the jump at first it will be interesting to see who many of those people continue to watch her instead of Brian Williams on NBC or Charles Gibson on ABC. The show Katie Couric is taking over is third in the ratings which in some ways means they are free to try new things. The landscape is changing in many ways with more people getting there news from the internet so having a women instead of a male anchor makes the show a little bit different to the past norm which isn't a bad thing. I by the way don't watch any of them often on television but i do watch the ABC World News Video Podcast with Charles Gibson everyday on my computer.

Rosie Makes Debut On "The View"

Today Rosie O Donnell made her long awaited debut on ABC's "The View." Rosie is replacing Meredith Vieira who left in June to host NBC's "Today Show" this fall. The show has a brand new set for its tenth season and other than that and, Rosie joining the cast the show the show seems to be the same show we are all familiar with.

Crocodile Hunter Has Died

Steve Irwin or as he is more widely known as The Crocodile Hunter on television has died. Steve was diving off the northeast coast of Australia when he was killed by a stingray barb through the chest. Steve was known on his show for getting up close to dangerous animals such as deadly snakes, spiders and crocodiles on his show. The shows were always entertaining apart from being educational and he will be missed.

Big Brother All Stars On CBS

Before season four of Big Brother on CBS I would watch occasionally but from then onwards I got hooked. The show if you are not familiar is a reality show where people or houseguests as they are called are locked in a specially constructed house for the summer with cameras everywhere filming everything that goes on. The house guests compete against each other for things such as Head Of Household or Power Of Veto both of which have the power to alter the game. Each week usually one person is voted out by the other guests and has to leave the house. A jury of ex house guests votes for who will win the grand prize out of the last two members in the house. In the house alliances form and people back stab and lie to each other in order to stay in the house; The show is like Survivor in that respect but much more intense because of the close quarters and also without tribes the line on alliances is less clear. This season is the all star season with houseguests from past seasons competing against each other. Four members of last season Season Six went in and had an alliance together plus they were good at winning competitions so they should have easily got rid of the other members; But of course they made stupid discussions which costed them so now we are down to the last four with one member of Season Six left. The show is like being a fly on the wall and watching how people manipulate each other to get closer to the prize money. Im sure Freud would have found this show interesting in the study of people, I don't know what it says about me but I cannot miss an episode.

9-11 Show Concerns Some CBS Affilates

A powerful and moving documentary concerning the events of 9-11 is causeing concern for some CBS affiliates. The documentary hosted by Robert De Niro includes the only known footage of the first plane hitting the World Trade Center. The problem which has caused trouble and forced two dozen CBS affiliates to cancel or delay broadcast of the show is the language used by the firefighters in the programme. Since the Janet Jackson incident on the Superbowl the FCC has cracked down on indecent content and raised the fine from $32,500 per incident to $325,000 per station. This programme has already aired twice without incident but affiliates are afraid of big fines now. I don't have a problem with keeping bad language off broadcast television especially in the early hours of primetime. There is rough language in this programme but it shows bravery under intense pressure and yes the language is rough but i believe the show should be shown as is with a disclaimer of course to warn parents. The content of this show is hard to watch but it shows people coming together and risking everything to help strangers in a horrible day for America. This country is known for freedom of speech and this programme is a snapshot of America at its best overcoming a horrible day and if FCC fines stations for showing this they would be doing a great injustice to the American people.

You're Fired Carolyn Says Donald Trump

Carolyn Kepcher who became widely known after her apperances on NBC's The Apprentice has left the Trump Organization. It has been reported that she was let go because her television stardom had gone to her head and she was too distracted from her work for Trump. Whatever the reason why she left its a little sad because she was tough and interesting to watch on the show. For the upcoming season in Los Angeles where production has already wrapped she was replaced by Ivanka who is Donalds daughter and George was replaced a lot of the time by Donald Trump Jr who is one of Donalds sons. Because the show is set in Los Angeles and the 78 year old George works for Donald on the East Coast his lessened role on the show was expected.

Beverly Hills 90210 & Melrose Coming to DVD

Two huge shows from the 90's Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place are finally going to be released on dvd. Both shows first season will be released on November 7th at a price of $62 each or $108.99 for combo set of both. I grew up watching both of them especially 90210 so I must say im looking forward to there release. Because of music rights issues the music in the early issues has been replaced which i hope doesn't change the feel of the shows but im sure will be okay.
